Cottage plants
are defined as perennials that have only a small amount of
woody tissue, softer stems and branches than those of trees
and shrubs.
Some of these are
called herbaceous because although their root system have
an indefinite life, their leaves and branches may die down
each year.
Whether herbaceous
or enduring, no garden should be without some representative
of these versatile and complementary plants.
