Useful Tips & Hints for Native Plants

All Australian native plants are sensitive to high levels of phosphates in the soil. It is best to avoid feeding with chemical fertilizers. It is suggested to use a slow release Osmocote that is specially formulated for native plants.

Avoid heavy clay soils when planting, natives prefer a well drained sandy-loam. If clay is prevalent, sit the root ball on top of the clay and build the soil levels up to the base of the trunk.
Bird attracting native plants include; Kangaroo Paw (Anigosanthus), Bottlebrush (Callistemon), Spider flowers (Grevillea), Lillypilly (Syzigium), Banksia and Paperbarks (Melaleuca). Many of these come in several varieties with different heights, thus being used for assorted purposes such as hedges, groundcovers, shrub or tree specimens.

To increase redness in N.S.W. Christmas bush, place your disused steelwool pads around the base of the tree around September. Alternatively, purchase Iron Chelates and use as a fertilizer. Many of the dwarf natives are suitable for pots. These include Eriostemon, Erica, Callistemon ‘Little John’, Brachicome daisies, Viola hederacea and many native fern and grass species.
